World Animal Protection (WAP) is a global nonprofit committed to improving animal welfare and ending cruelty worldwide. Their mission spans across communities, farming, disaster zones, and wildlife, where they advocate for humane treatment, influence policies, and drive lasting change.
In collaboration with our design partners at Jolt, we developed an internal tool to visualise WAP’s “Theory of Change” — a framework that maps out the organisation’s strategies, activities, and impacts. This interactive tool allows users to explore the relationships between key initiatives, mechanisms, and outcomes, demonstrating how they contribute to WAP’s overarching mission.
One of the core challenges was ensuring a seamless and intuitive experience while maintaining clear connections between elements. To achieve this, we designed a structured data model and built a custom JavaScript application that transforms this data into a dynamic, interactive flow diagram.
A key focus was on preserving the clarity of links between nodes, ensuring smooth animations during transitions, and preventing visual clutter. Just as important was making sure the tool worked flawlessly across all devices, from smartphones to large desktops, with a variety of input methods.
The result is an engaging and insightful tool that helps WAP staff and stakeholders better understand and communicate their activities and their impact.
It's all very well showing you someone else's project, but we'd love to hear about yours.
